Minion® Math

“Minion® Math” is a set of mathematical fonts, designed to accompany the OpenType font “Adobe Minion Pro” and extending it to mathematical typesetting.

General Information

Minion Math consists of 20 fonts:
4 weights (Regular, Medium, Semibold, Bold – just as Minion)
each in 5 optical sizes (Tiny, Caption, Text, Subhead, Display).

Minion Math offers an additional size “Tiny” for second-order superscripts and subscripts (at font sizes below 6pt); this optical size is not available in Minion Pro.

The Minion Math fonts are designed as an add-on package to Minion Pro.
Each font requires the respective Adobe Minion Pro font
(except the fonts in size “Tiny” size: these offer an extended glyph set and are designed to “stand alone” with the complete glyph set needed for mathematics).

Font Format and Supported Typesetting Systems

Currently the fonts are mainly usable with LaTeX.
Support for other typesetting systems is in preparation.

  • Font format: OpenType (otf / cff)
(Type 1 / pfb available upon request)
  • OpenType MATH table: in preparation
(this will allow math typesetting in Microsoft Office 2007)
  • OpenType features: in preparation
  • LaTeX support: working (and under further development)
  • Xe(La)TeX and ConTeXt support: in preparation

Of course TeX (and other) support files are supplied free-of-charge, and they (and any updates to them) will be available for download on the website, and also on CTAN at a lager stage.

Glyph Set

Each font features the same large glyph set; in the current release these are approximately 1290 glyphs per font (approx. 1550 glyphs in “Tiny” fonts).

This covers all LaTeX “oldmath” plus “ams” and all “newmath” glyphs, and a few more – except for math alphabets; these will be added in a later release
(Minion Math Blackboard Bold is included; within LaTeX support currently the fonts “eufr” are used for Fraktur and “rsfs” for Formal Script; original Minion Pro Italic is used for Math Italic with changed kerning via virtual fonts; a real (wider) Math Italic is under development).

Complete support of all Unicode math glyphs is under development and will be offered at a later stage.

The End User License Agreement (EULA) for Minion Math can be found here (html version) or as pdf here (pdf version).

Minion Math in Use

Samples of Minion Math can be found in my conference presentations, especially in “Fonts for Mathematics”.

You could also have a look at www.motionmountain.eu (by downloading the pdf files; that's a free physics text book using Minion Pro and Minion Math).

Version Information

The current version of Minion Math is 1.014, released in April 2009.

The working title of the fonts was “typoma MnMath”.
Minion Math was first released in November 2008 (limited to a few customers).
